Why hours in Rust are worth having
Rust has the strictest hour culture of any game on Steam. A large share of community servers set a minimum playtime before they will let you connect, commonly in the hundreds of hours, specifically to keep out fresh accounts and cheaters who burn through them.
That leaves legitimate new players locked out of most of the server list. You cannot play your way past the gate on the servers that have one, because the gate is what stops you playing there.
Idling is the direct answer to a playtime requirement: the requirement counts hours on the game, and idling produces hours on the game.
